Geologists plan to drill into Mt. Halla on Jeju Island in order to determine the age of the volcano.

The Jeju World Nature Heritage Center said Wednesday it will conduct the research until 2019 in conjunction with the Korea Institute for Geoscience and Mineral Resources.

Researchers want to know when the Baeknokdam crater at the summit was created by drilling 20 to 40 m into the surface to collect samples.

The crater is believed to be about 25,000 years old.

Geologists also plan to verify the climate at the time of the volcanic explosion by analyzing pollen and rock samples gathered by drilling. The equipment will be transported to the crater by helicopter.
